What the latest brief says
Job postings are down in tech hubs and up in Boise, Wichita and Reno
- Indeed's postings index is 32.4% below its February 2020 level in Seattle and 36.3% above it in Jackson, Mississippi, so hiring is drifting away from the tech coasts toward places like Boise, Wichita and Reno.
- Once local prices are counted, the typical official wage in San Jose is worth $76,116 in average-US dollars, against $42,609 in Miami.
- Only 37.8% of the postings we read list pay, but the share is 65.7% in the 13 states that require it and 24% in the others (100 largest cities).
- Posted pay for software developers beats the official median in 17 of 19 metro areas we compared, led by Pittsburgh at 76.3% above, which says as much about who posts pay as about what developers earn.
- The national openings rate was 4.3% in August against 4.2% a year earlier, and we expect a slow drift rather than a sharp turn in the months ahead.
