Questions
How does the paycheck calculator work?
It scales your salary by the ratio of local price levels. The price levels are the Bureau of Economic Analysis regional price parities (2024), where 100 is the US average and the index covers goods and services including housing. A place with prices 10% higher needs about a 10% higher salary to buy the same things.
Does it include taxes?
No. It compares prices only. State and local taxes, commuting costs, and your own spending mix can change the answer, so treat the result as a starting point.
Where do the numbers come from?
Price levels come from the Bureau of Economic Analysis, wages from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (May 2025), and posted pay and unemployment from our monthly data. Every number is on the page for each place.
