How we count
Every number on these pages comes from job postings that employers publish on their own career sites. We do not use LinkedIn, Indeed or Google listings, and we never collect anything from applicants.
Source
Each month we read the public career pages of the employers we track (7678 in October 2026) on the hiring systems they use, including Greenhouse, Lever, Ashby, Workday, iCIMS and SmartRecruiters. 335,906 open postings were counted on 2026-10-10.
What a city means
A posting belongs to a city when its location names that city and state. Postings listing several cities count in each. Suburbs are not yet folded into their metro area.
Pay
"Pay listed" is the share of postings that include a pay range. The median is the middle of the range midpoints, converted to a yearly amount when the posting gives hourly pay. Placeholders and ambiguous figures are discarded. Nothing is estimated.
When a city is published
At least 100 postings from 10 or more employers, with no single employer above 25% of the city's postings. Posted-pay medians need 20 postings with pay; kinds of job need 10. Industry rows need 15 postings.
Limits
This is the set of employers we cover, not every job in a city, and it changes as we add employers. Shares are more reliable than raw counts. Industries are assigned by what the employer does.
Prices, wages and unemployment
Official wages are the Bureau of Labor Statistics median annual wages (Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics, May 2025) for each metro area. Price levels are the Bureau of Economic Analysis regional price parities for 2024, where 100 is the US average. Paycheck power divides the official median wage for all jobs by the price level, so it shows what the typical paycheck buys compared with the average US metro area. Unemployment rates are BLS Local Area Unemployment Statistics, and job openings come from the BLS JOLTS survey for the state. Posting trends from Indeed come from the Indeed Hiring Lab Job Postings Index. Federal hiring comes from USAJOBS.
Application questions
For employers on Greenhouse we also count the wording of the questions on the application form. Only the question text is stored.
