ABOUT 1X
We’re building humanoid robots that work in the home—doing the chores, handling the tasks, and giving people their time back. Simple, but it’s not.
To do this right, we have to solve robotics, AI, and manufacturing at the same time, at scale, in a form factor that has to be safe enough to live with your family. If you’re inspired by this, you’ll thrive here. We’ve been at this since 2014, and we’re at the point where the hardest problems are behind us and the hardest work is in front of us.
NEO is our flagship—a home robot designed to move, learn, and operate in the real world alongside real people. We’re not demoing it—we’re shipping it.
If you’ve spent your career working on problems that matter and want to see them actually reach the world, this is that moment. We’re scaling with intention, and we need people who want to build something that will fundamentally change how humans spend their time.
ABOUT THE TEAM
The People team is responsible for building the organization that will build the future of humanoid robotics. We partner closely with leaders across the company to strengthen leadership, develop high-performing teams, and build the people programs and organizational foundations needed to support rapid growth.
People plays a critical role in 1X's ability to scale. The team works with urgency, sound judgment, and a builder's mindset to ensure our leaders and employees have the structure, support, and clarity needed to do the best work of their careers.
YOUR CHARTER
The mission of this role is to be the Senior People Partner to 1X's organizations, owning organizational design, talent, and leadership capability for a defined client group as the company scales.
You own one client group end to end. You work directly with the executives and VPs who lead it, not through a lead HRBP. You decide how these organizations are structured, how their leaders are developed, and how compensation and performance decisions are made and defended. Each Senior HR Business Partner at 1X owns a distinct organization.
KEY OUTCOMES
- Own the People partnership for your client group. Each of its leaders treats you as their first call on organization, talent, and leadership decisions.
- Lead organizational design and workforce planning for the client group, so headcount, structure, and succession plans are in place ahead of each growth phase rather than after it.
- Run the performance, promotion, and compensation cycles for the client group end to end, including calibration and executive review, with decisions that are consistent, defensible, and on time.
- Lead complex employee relations matters and investigations independently, with outcomes that hold up under legal review and protect the employee experience.
- Design and lead People programs that raise manager effectiveness across the company, and set the standard that peer HR Business Partners build on.
KEY COMPETENCIES
- Executive partnership: earns the trust of VPs and executives and changes their decisions with evidence and judgment, not seniority.
- Organizational design and workforce planning at the function level, with a track record of structures that survived the next growth phase.
- Independent employee relations judgment on high-risk and senior-level matters.
- Builder mindset: has created compensation, performance, and leadership programs from nothing and scaled them.
- Data-driven: uses workforce and engagement data to guide decisions and to challenge leaders when the data disagrees with them.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
- 8+ years of HR experience, including 5+ years as a dedicated HR Business Partner or People Business Partner.
- Demonstrated success as the sole or lead People partner to VP-level and executive leaders in a defined client group, such as Engineering, Manufacturing, Operations, Finance, Legal, or Marketing. The application asks which organizations you have supported; answer it directly.
- Proven track record of leading organizational design, workforce planning, and succession planning for a client group, not contributing to it.
- Experience running full performance, promotion, and compensation cycles end to end, including calibration.
- Experience leading complex employee relations investigations independently, with working knowledge of California employment law.
- Ability to work onsite in San Carlos, CA.
PREFERRED SKILLS
- Experience in a rapidly scaling startup or high-growth technology company.
- Experience partnering with executive teams through reorganization or business transformation.
- Experience mentoring or leading other HR Business Partners.
- Experience designing compensation frameworks or leveling structures.
- PHR, SPHR, SHRM-CP, or SHRM-SCP certification.
