LinkedIn headshot size
LinkedIn accepts a PNG or JPG profile photo from 400 by 400 pixels up to 7680 by 4320 pixels, up to 8 MB. A square photo around 400 to 1000 pixels is plenty.
Checked October 17, 2026 against LinkedIn's help page, Photo won't upload to your profile. LinkedIn changes these rules now and then, so check the page if an upload fails.
The limits
| LinkedIn says | |
|---|---|
| File type | PNG or JPG (not GIF) |

| Largest size | 7680 by 4320 pixels |
| File size | 8 MB at most |

Framing (our advice)
- Square. LinkedIn shows your photo in a circle, so keep your face and shoulders inside the middle.
- Head and shoulders, your face filling a good part of the frame. Not a distant full-length photo.
- Eyes looking at the camera, in even light, and a plain background.
- LinkedIn's own page says the photo should be one that "won't require much cropping", so crop before you upload.
- The banner is a separate image; do not use your headshot file as the banner.
Make the right sizes
Our free headshot maker makes a 400 by 400 and a 1000 by 1000 JPG for LinkedIn, and a 1584 by 396 banner, from one photo. It runs in your browser and your photo is not uploaded. Both photo sizes are inside LinkedIn's limits.
Check before you save
- Open your profile on a phone. Is your face clear at small size?
- Is the background calm?
- Does it look like you today?
Questions
Does my photo have to be square?
LinkedIn lets you crop after you upload; a square photo needs the least cropping.
Which file type?
PNG or JPG. LinkedIn does not support GIF.
Is a bigger file better?
Not past a point. LinkedIn's limit is 8 MB; a 1000 by 1000 photo is much smaller than that.
Do I need a different image for the banner?
Yes; the banner is a separate, wide image.
